During white washing, lime is dissolved in water and the slaked lime solution formed is applied on the walls and roofs. This slaked lime reacts slowly with carbon dioxide of air and forms a thin shining layer of calcium carbonate. CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2 Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O
