p(x) = x^2+px-4 p(-4)= (-4)^2 + p(-4) - 4 = 16 - 4p - 4 = 0 = -4p = -12 = p = 3. .....(1) Now,for equal roots equation must satisfy, b^2 - 4ac =0. ...(2) On comparing eq.x^2+px+k=0 with ax^2 +bx +c=0 We get, a=1 , b= p =3(by eq.1), c=k Putting the value in eq (2) we get = (3)^2 - 4(1)(k)=0 = 9 - 4k = 0 = -4k= -9 = k= 9/4 Therefore the value of k is 9/4
