⇒Let, the side of the first square be=x the side of the second square be=y According to the first condition, x²+y²=544 →① According to the second condition, 4x-4y=32 (x>y) x-y=8 →② x=8-y Now putting x value in eq.1 (8-y)²+y²=544 64-16y+y²+y²=544 2y²-16y-480=0 y²-8y-240=0 Appliying quadratic formula, y=-(-8)±√-8²-4(-240) -------------------------- 2 y=20 and -12 (ignoring negative sign) Now put the value of y in eq.2 x-y=32 x=32-20 x=12 #Hope it is helpful...
