CONDUCTOR = A solid having the highest occupied band partially filled or a completely filled band overlapping with a completely filled band acts as a conductor. When a potential difference is applied to the metal, the elctrons in a partially filled band jump to a higher energy level.

INSULATOR = A solid having each occupied band completely filled and possesing a large energy hao between highest occupied band. All energy bands are completely filled and there exist a large forbidden zone.
