If mucus will not be secreted by gastric gland then HCL will damage the stomach, it can cause stomach pain..

The alkaline mucous layer protects epithelial cells of stomach wall against the acids and enzymes in the gastric lumen.

If mucus is not secreted by the gastric glands, then the hydrochloric acid secreted by the glands will digest or corrode the walls of the stomach.
