Constitution of 1791, French constitution created by the National Assembly during the French Revolution. It retained the monarchy, but sovereignty effectively resided in the Legislative Assembly, which was elected by a system of indirect voting. The political system of France consists of an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch. Executive power is exercised by the President of the Republic and the Government. ... The Prime Minister is appointed by the President, and is responsible to Parliament.
The main features of the Constitution of 1791 were
1. France became a constitutional monarchy. The king's powers were restricted and he came under the supervision of the National Assembly.
2. Feudalism was abolished.
3. Land owned by the church was confiscated and the church lost the power to impose taxes.
4. Separation of power was introduced. Power was divided between the legislature, executive and judiciary.
5. Members of the National Assembly were to be chosen through indirect elections.
