The Napoleonic Code made the authority of men over their families stronger, deprived women of any individual rights, and reduced the rights of illegitimate children. All male citizens were also granted equal rights under the law and the right to religious dissent, but colonial slavery was reintroduced.

The Napoleonic Code was considered a progressive legal system reflecting broad-minded values. However, the code states about the equality before the law but didn't provide equal status to women. It was limited suffrage and reduced women to the status of a minor, subject to the authority of fathers and husbands.
