If the applied reverse voltage is increased gradually, then a stage is reached when covalent bonds in semiconductor are broken and a large number of charge carriers (electron-hole pair) are generated which give rise to a sharp increase in reverse current. This phenomenon is called breakdown .The voltage at which breakdown occurs is called breakdown voltage.
