It causes the water in hydrochloride acid to react with the iron and produce iron oxide (rust) and hydrogen gas. The chemical reaction between Iron and hydrochloric acid yields Hydrogen and Ferrous Chloride or Iron(II) Chloride according to the following equation. Fe (s) + 2HCl (aq) => FeCl2(aq) + H2 (g).
