It can done by completing the square method X^2+2X-1=0 {X^2+2X +1}-1-1=0 (adding and subtracting1) (X+1)^2-2=0 (X+1)^2=2 Squareroot both sides X+1=2^(1/2) or X+1=-2^(1/2) X=-1+2^(1/2) or X=-1-2^(1/2)
