Air is a mixture of many gases. The major component of air is nitrogen gas which is 78%. The second major component of air is oxygen which is 21%. Air is mainly a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen gas with small amounts of carbon dioxide gas, water vapour and other gases. Thus, 99% of air is composed of nitrogen and oxygen and the remaining 1% of air consists of carbon dioxide, water vapour, a few other gases and some dust particles. The composition of air changes slightly from place to place and season to season. For example, the air over industrial cities has a higher amount of carbon dioxide whereas in coastal areas there is more water vapour in air.
