Water scarcity in most cases is caused by over- exploitation, excessive use and unequal access to water among different social groups. Water scarcity may be an outcome of large and growing population and consequent greater demands for water, and unequal access to it. Water shortages may be caused by climate change, such as altered weather patterns including droughts or floods, increased pollution, and increased human demand and overuse of water. A water crisis is a situation where the available potable, unpolluted water within a region is less than that region's demand.
