In 1789, a severe winter had set in Paris. There was a bad harvest; the price of bread rose. The bakers exploited the situation and hoarded supplies. After spending hours in long queues at the bakery, crowds of angry women stormed into the shops. Looking at the situation and the possibilities of a large scale riots , the king ordered troops to move into Paris.
