Following were the privileges enjoyed by the first two Estates of the French society:

The first two Estates enjoyed the right to command military regiments and hold positions in the State apparatus.
The first two Estates were exempt from the burden of direct taxation.
When the taxes were raised for all the three Estates, the landowners refused the proposals in order to maintain their privileges.
