अतीत में विदेशी' उस व्यक्ति को माना जाता था -
जो किसी गांव में बाहर से आता था, और जो उस समाज या संस्कृति का हिस्सा नहीं होता था। अतः किसी गांव या नगर वासी के लिए बनवासी "विदेशी" होता था । परंतु एक ही गांव में रहने वाले दो अलग-अलग धर्मों तथा परंपराओं से जुड़े लोग विदेशी नहीं होते थे।
