Soaps do not act efficiently in hard water due to presenc eof of Ca2+ and Mg^2Negative and it gives insoluble calcium and magnesium salts of fatty acids. These precipitates called scum, stick to the fabric and make thier cleaning difficult.

1) Soap doesn't work well in the hard water as they form scum instead of lather. 2) This scum sticks to the cloth and makes washing difficult, some times the colour of the fabric also fades away. 3) They are not suitable for some fabric likes silk, wool as the alkalis spoils the fibre.
