Let present age of jacob be x and his son be y. 5 year hence, Jacob age=x+5 and son age =y+5. A/q x+5=3(y+5) => x+5=3y+15 =>x=3y+10-------------------------(1) 5 year ago, Jacob age=x-5 and son age=y-5. A/q x-5=7(y-5) =>x-5=7y-35 =>3y+10=7y-30 (using (1)) =>(10)+30=7y-3y =>y=40/4=10. Son present age=10 and Jacob age=40year.
