*The idea of Self Help Groups is to organise rural poor(women) into small SHGs and pool their savings. *The amount of money collected depends on the person's ability to save. This fund(the savings) is then used to raise loans. Members can take small loans to meet their needs. *The rate of interest is much lower than that provided by moneylenders and traders. Thus, the loans are reasonable and the possibility of debt trap is decreased. *The SHGs can take loans from banks without collateral as the bank is assured of repayment from within the group. *It also provides the members a platform to discuss social issues such as health, nutrition, etc.
