To find a square root of a number without a calculator, see if you can get to that whole number by squaring smaller numbers, or multiplying a smaller number by itself. If the number is a perfect square, you will get a whole number as the square root. First, divide the number you're trying to find the square root of by the average. Then, find the average of that number and the original average by adding them together and dividing by 2. For example, first you would divide 7, the number you started with, by 2.16, the average you calculated, and get 3.24.
