The reaction works best for forming asymmetrical products if the halide reactants are somehow separate in their relative chemical reactivities. The Wurtz reaction, named after Charles-Adolphe Wurtz, is a coupling reaction in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and recently inorganic main group polymers, whereby two alkyl halides are reacted with sodium metal in dry ether solution to form a higher alkane: 2R–X + 2Na → R–R + 2Na+X. Wurtz Reaction. Wurtz reaction is an organic chemical coupling reaction wherein sodium metal is reacted with two alkyl halides in the environment provided by a solution of dry ether in order to form a higher alkane along with a compound containing sodium and the halogen.
