After the revolutionary war, monarch was abolished in France. The Jacobin club had declined which meant that a new government with a new constitution rose. The new government had appointed a directory. But, the directoy always clashed with the legislative. So, the directoy appointed a military dictator- Napoleon Bonaparte. Later in 1804, he crowned himself the emperor of France. He saw himself as the moderniser of Europe. He went on conquering kingdom after kingdom, disposing the kings and placing his family members in each kingdom he conqured. Many people saw him as a liberator who would bring freedom to hid people. He was defeated at Waterloo.

Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte:

  • After the French Revolution, France became a republic.
  • The Jacobins introduced some radical reforms but they under Robespierre followed the policies so relentlessly that he himself was guillotine in July 1794.
  • The fall of the Jacobin government allowed the wealthier middle class to seize power. Two legislative councils were elected, who then appointed a Directory, an executive made of five members
  • Directors often clashed with legislative Councils and the latter sought to dismiss them.
  • Political instability of the Directory paved the way for the rise of military dictator Napoleon Bonaparte
