A combination reaction is one in which two or more substances react together to form a third substance which is the addition product of the two.
Here there is an exchange of electrons between the two compounds. When solid iron ‘metal is heated’ with powder sulphur which is a non-metal iron sulphide is formed. Iron exhibits a variable valency of 2 and 3.
Here it loses two electrons, on the other ‘hand sulphur’ gains these two electrons. And hence FeS is formed.
Fe + S ⟶ FeS
