The guillotine is a machine used to execute people by decapitation (chopping off their heads). A guillotine is made of a heavy blade attached to a rack, which moves up and down on a vertical frame. The guillotine was introduced to France by Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotine, he was not the inventor of the machine only a lobbyist for it. The idea behind its introduction was to end the spectacle of public torture and to eliminate the severity of pain involved with capital punishment.
