When an unsymmetrical reagent is treated with unsymmetrical alkene in presence of peroxide, then addition takes place against the Markownikoff's rule i.e. negative part of reagent adds to that carbon ot carbon-carbon double bond which carries more number of hydrogen atoms. This is known as peroxide effect.
