Joseph Stalin was born in Gori, Georgia, Russian Empire (18 December 1878 – 5 March 1953). was a Georgian politician who became leader of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death. He replaced Vladimir Lenin as leader of the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin was a Georgia-born politician who became a communist and known for gaining dictatorial control of the Soviet Union by a combination of politics and terror. In Stalin's view, counter-revolutionary elements will try to derail the transition to full communism, and the state must be powerful enough to defeat them. For this reason, Communist regimes influenced by Stalin have been widely described as totalitarian.
