Samanta was a title and position used by the army people of kings in the history of the Indian subcontinent. The institution of Samanta finds mention for the first time in epigraphs of northern India dating to the 6th century. Samantas is the name given to tributary kings or landed chiefs who were granted a piece of land by the King in return for their allegiance to the crown and had to perform mandatory military duties whenever called upon by the King to serve.
