When dilute Hydrochloric acid is added to iron filings, iron chloride & hydrogen gas is produced. The iron displaces hydrogen from hydrochloric acid to form iron (II) chloride & hydrogen gas. Iron reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce iron(II) chloride and hydrogen gas: Fe(s) + 2 HCl(aq) → FeCl 2 (aq) + H 2 (g) The H 2 gas from the reaction of 2.2 g of iron with excess acid is collected in a 10.0-L flask at 25 °C.
