The condition of France was very poor before the revolution took place as the population was divided on the basses of estates. the different divisions were -
1)the clergy - they enjoyed the privilege by birth and did not give the taxes.
2)nobility - they also enjoyed birth privileges as well as feudal privileges, they also didn't have to pay taxes.
3) the third estate (the regular man) - they composed nearly 80% of the population and gave all the taxes.

The French king at the time of the revolution king Louis XVI also raised the taxes and prices of grains to maintain the treasury because of this act many people died from starvation.
