The Great Fear was a wave of peasant riots and violence that swept through France in July and August 1789.
In the countryside rumours spread from village to village that the lords of the manor had hired bands of brigands who were on their way to destroy the ripe crops. Fearing for their crops, peasants attacked chateaux (a French country house or a castle), looted hoarded grain and burnt down documents containing records of manorial dues. Due to the rising peasant attacks, many nobles fled from their homes and took shelter in the neighbouring countries.
