In this reaction, CuO is changing into Cu. That is, oxygen is being removed from copper oxide. Removal of oxygen from a compound is called reduction, so we can say that copper oxide is being reduced to copper. On the other hand H₂ is changing into H₂O. That is, oxygen is being added to hydrogen. The addition of oxygen to a substance is called oxidation, so we can say that oxygen is being oxidised to water.

The chemical reaction in which the oxidation and reduction takes place simultaneously is called redox reaction.
