A motion that repeats itself again and again at regular intervals of time is called a periodic motion. All oscillatory motions are periodic motions but all periodic motions are not oscillatory. For example, the motion of the moon around the earth is periodic but not oscillatory.
A particle is said to execute simple harmonic motion if it’s acceleration is directly proportional to its displacement from the equilibrium position and is always directed towards the equilibrium position. Simple harmonic motion is a straight line motion and it requires a restoring force.
