How can we differ conductors from insulators ? Why cant we electrify a metal and by rubbing it while holding in our hand ? How can we charge it?

  • Conductors conduct electrical current very easily because of their free electrons.
  • Insulators oppose electrical current and make poor conductors.
  • Some common conductors are copper, aluminum, gold, and silver.
  • Some common insulators are glass, air, plastic, rubber, and wood.

The glass is an insulator, so when electrons are exchanged between it and the cloth you are rubbing it with, the charges stay put on the glass. But with an iron rod, the charges distribute around the rod. Since you are touching it, the charges also distribute around you. So this drains off the charge.
