Religious issues and changes became highly debated in the colonial society in the early 19th century. These debates took place through print and public. People resorted to the print medium and newspapers to spread the news far and wide. New ideas sprung up as more and more people started actively reading about controversies between religious and social reformers.
Some topics that were discussed or create controversies were idolatry, widow immolation, change of Muslim laws and downfall of Muslim dynasties to mention a few.
