  • Only an IAS officer is appointed as the District Magistrate [DM] in any district in any state in India.
  • In some states, an IAS officer is posted as DM after completing the service of around 4 to 5 years. But, in some states, it takes around 10 years for an IAS officer to be appointed as a DM.
  • The DM is also called as District Collector in some states and the name is Deputy Commissioner in some states.
  • He / she is the head of all the departments in the district.

IAS is like a service joining a service in the Govt. ... being DM or District Magistrate is only a designation for IAS officers
