The result of the Brundtland Commission Report of 1987 was the emergence of a new consciousness in the world about the importance of sustainable development. The Brundtland Commission gave a new definition of sustainable development as a concept that integrates the importance of development with the cause of environmental protection. Since the Commission's report, the importance of sustainable development has been realized all over the world. It is now realized that without environmental protection, development is not sustainable. Hence, all development measures today are assessed for how far those measures are consistent with the cause of environmental protection.
