x + y = 18
let x be 18-y
so,
(18-y)² + y² = 290
18²+ y² - 36y + y² = 290
2y² - 36y = -34
2y² - 36y +34 = 0
solving the equation
y² -34y-2y+68 = 0
y(y-34) -2( y-34) = 0
(y-2) (y-34) = 0
so,
y= 2 or 34
case 1,
y =2 and x = 16

case 2
y = 34
x = -16
