SOAPS are Na or K salts of a long chain carboxylic acid while DETERGENTS are Na salts of long chain benzene sulphonic acid or alkyl hydrogensulphates. Due to the presence of Ca and Mg ions present in it, it does not form lather instead forms scum. Detergents are non biogegradable. They make the water bodies dirty and cause harm to the marine organisms
