Let the number be x

When x is multiplied by 3 = 3x exceed by 40

{tex} = > 3x = 40 + x{/tex}

{tex} = > 3x - x = 40{/tex}

{tex} = > 2x = 40{/tex}

{tex} = > x = 40 \div 2{/tex}

{tex} = > x = 20{/tex}
