The molar mass is the mass of one mole (or 6.023 X 1023) particles of that substance. The molar mass of an element is equal to the numerical value of the atomic mass. However, in case of molar mass, the units change from ‘u’ to ‘g’. The molar mass of an atom is also known as gram atomic mass.
For example mass of 6.023 X 1023 atoms of sodium or molar mass of sodium is 23g, but its atomic mass is 23u
Calculation of molar mass: The molar mass of oxygen is equal to mass of one mole of oxygen. Oxygen forms a divalent molecule, so this is the mass of one mole of O2.
Atomic weight of oxygen atom = 16g
Molar mass of oxygen = 2 x 16.00 g = 32.00 g
Molar mass of a molecule: Molar mass of a molecule is the mass of 1 mole of molecule.
To find the molar mass of a molecule we should add the atomic masses of all the atoms present in that molecule.
The molar mass of water is the mass of one mole of H2O.
Now add the atomic masses of the atoms of hydrogen and oxygen in a molecule of water
= 2 x 1.008 g+ 1 x 16.00 g = 18.02 g
