Draw the fixture for 21 teams in a knock out tournament. Ans. Number of teams, n = 21 Number of teams in each quarter = n 4 = 21 4 On dividing 21 by 4, since Quotient = 5 and remainder= 1, Number of teams in 1st quarter = 5 + 1 = 6 Number of teams in 2nd quarter = 5 Number of teams in 3rd quarter = 5 Number of teams in 4th quarter = 5 Number of matches = n–1 = 21–1 = 20 Since the number above 21 in the power of 2 is 32 i.e., (2)5 So, number of rounds = 5 Number of byes, nb = (2)5 – n = 32 – 21 = 11 Number of byes in upper half = nb – 1 2 = 11 – 1 2 = 10 2 = 5
