Magnesium ribbon reacts with oxygen present in air to form a protective and inery layer of magnesium on its surface.This layer is unreactive and prevents the ribbon from burning. Hence,it needs to be cleaned with sand paper before burning in air.

Clean the magnesium ribbon about 2cm long by rubbing it with the sand paper. Burn the magnesium ribbon. The magnesium ribbon burns with a dazzling white light and changes into a white powder.
