a) In the year 1900, ET Paull, a famous music publisher, produced a music book that had an image on the cover page revealing the Dawn of the Century. At the center of the image is a goddess-like figure known as the angel of evolution, holding the flag of the new century.
The angel is gently floating on a wheel having wings, representing time. Her flight is taking her into the future. Hovering around, behind the angel are the signs of advancement: camera, railway, printing press, factory, and machines.
b) Phalke had decided to 'make a film' after watching the '1906 film The Life of Christ' at a theatre in 'Mumbai'. He then went to London for 2 weeks to learn the techniques of filmmaking established by Phalke Films Company. He imported the hardware needed for the 'filmmaking and exhibition from France', England, the US, and Germany.
After considering several stories described in Hindu mythology, Phalke's shortlisted Harishchandra which was also a popular play on Urdu and Marathi. Phalke sold all his belongings, but for his wife's mangalsutra, to realize his dream of filmmaking. Therefore, Phalke wrote the script for Harishchandra
