The dilution of acid is a highly exothermic process in which large amount of heat is evolved..When we add acid to water, then the heat release is absorbed by water..but when we add water to acid, then a large amount of heat is evolved at once..the heat changes some of the water to steam explosively which can splash the acid on our face or clothes and cause severe burns...So, it is suggested that acid should be added to water..
