The panchayati raj system is a unique experiment in Indian democracy. It aims at decentralisation of power to the grass root levels. Under this system, villagers get the political mandate to manage their own affairs and hence participate in the democratic process of the country at large. Therefore, it enables the citizens of India to become a part of the political mainstream and have a say in government at the most basic level of administration. Also, the panchayati raj system ensures large scale meaningful political involvement of women. This ensures that their voice is heard by the political class and government policies are finetuned to suit the needs of women.
