In any situation the first step is the breaking down of glucose(6 carbon molecule) into pyruvate(3 carbon molecule) . Then in the presence of O2 it takes place in mitochondria. It is known as aerobic respiration. In this process the pyruvate further breaks down into CO2 + H2O + energy. Then in the lack of O2 it takes place in our muscle cells. Secretion of lactic acid takes place. In this the pyruvate further breaks down into lactic acid + CO2 + energy. This causes sudden cramps in our muscle cells.
