We should clean magnesium ribbon before burning because in the open atmosphere magnesium react with oxygen and form a magnesium ribbon.magnesium ribbon cannot be burn in oxygen because it hinders to the magnesium

Bcoz mg is a very reactive metal when it stored it reacts with oxygen to form a layer of mg oxide on its surface.this layer is quite stable and prevent further reaction of mg with oxygen.the magnesium ribbon is cleaned by sand paper for removing this layer...........

We clean Mg ribbon before burning because to remove oxide layer of Mg . If we forget or do not remove or clean that oxide layer then it will not burn properly
