Why did the weavers and gomasthas clash
  • 1 answers

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 10 months ago

The word gomastha means agent in Persian. The gomasthas were Indian agents of the British East India Company, who signed bonds with the local weavers and artisans to deliver goods to the Company. They also fixed the prices of the goods.

Gomasthas were appointed by the government. They supervised the weavers. They collected the supplies and examined the quality of the cloth. They were arrogant and punished the weavers for delays in the supply of goods.  So there was a clash between the weavers and gomasthas.
