The electrodes are dipped in suitable electrolytes because
(i) The electrolytes yield cations and anions which are constantly in a state of motion in the electrolytic solution .
(ii) Ions act as carriers of electricity .
(iii) When an electric current is passed through the electrolyte , the positively charged ion ( cation ) move towards the negative electrode (cathode ) and negatively charged ions ( anions ) are directed to positive electrode (anode ) .
