The shape of the calcium channel protein allows only calcium ions to pass through the channel. ... There the calcium ions interact with the neurotransmitter containing vesicles (membrane-bound containers) causing them to fuse with the cell membrane, and release the neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. Calcium (Ca2+) is a vital element in the process of neurotransmitter release; when Ca2+ channels are blocked, neurotransmitter release is inhibited. Storage of the neurotransmitter in storage granules or vesicles in the axon terminal. Calcium enters the axon terminal during an action potential, causing release of the neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft. After its release, the transmitter binds to and activates a receptor in the postsynaptic membrane.
