The Green Revolution has transformed India to a food grain surplus country from a deficit one. No other activity has such immense impact on the socio-economic development of the people as the Green Revolution. Intensification of agriculture over the years has led to overall degradation of the fragile agro-ecosystem. Agricultural productivity growth at the national level increased the amount of land devoted to agriculture and agricultural employment, reduced agricultural imports, and led to a decline in urbanisation. All of these effects are most pronounced in countries that were lower in the 1960 income distribution.
